On Wednesday the 1st of June Jack, Amy, Harry, and myself went to NYLD11(National young leaders day) at the La Vida convention centre in Riccarton. There were a series of 5 speakers, in between the speakers were some interactive games were kids got to go up on stage, video clips and morning tea and lunch breaks.
The first speaker was Pat Buckley, who is a drug and alcohol counsellor and educator. He talked about his life growing up with an alcoholic father , and then getting involved with drugs, he talked to us about his struggle with drugs and how hard it was to stop.
The second speaker was Alison Mooney, she talked about the “Amazing you” , and then went on to talk about four types of animals with different personalities, the Otter, the Beaver, the Golden Retriever, and the Lion. She described there personalities, and the asked us to pick what animal we thought we were.
The third speaker was Christian Gullen, he talked about his childhood growing up, and how he didn’t make many friends, the doctor said he was socially munted. He talked about the X Factor, and gave us three tips Be friendly say a good word, and listen.
The fourth speaker was Adam Hall, a Paralympic gold medalist in the Slalom Ski race. He was born with Spinabifida , and practiced anywhere from Mt Hutt to Codrona, he shared his special “journey to the top”.
The fifth speaker was Jason Gunn, he said you can’t plan for everything. He also talked about the voice inside your head called doubt, which makes you second guess yourself , and think what if? He said we should set ourself small goals which we can achieve over a short period of time, and keep progressing from there.
I really enjoyed going to NYLD11 it was very inspiring hearing the speakers personal experiences , and I enjoyed it throughly.
